When I want to start a paragraph with an indent, hitting tab just takes me to the tags instead of indenting the text. I can Jerry-rig it with spaces at the start of the paragraph to simulate an indent, but it'd be nice for me and other writers out there if we could just use the tab key or! another form of markdown - so long as it's more consistent than "did I hit space ten or twelve times?"

You can use the CSS text-indent property in markdown. The default tab behavior probably shouldn't be changed as it's an HTML accessibility feature.
