While Trending/Explore features have been vetted, I still think it's a good idea for staff to internally keep track of popular tags and topics and post a weekly summary of hand-selected trends, memes, news items, pop culture moments, etc. - curated to exclude spam and abuse.
I think that extra step is the key to improve discoverability (linking to the tags in the body of the post) and encourage discussion without the drawbacks of automated analytics.
