way to refresh feed on top; auto populating new post #s (and notifs)

maybe a button on the top of your main feed that will refresh it. if possible, with the number of new posts, like twitter has. click and it updates the feed.
also, for the bubble that indicates new notifications - it populates when the page is reloaded, but if it's possible to update/populate the number in real time, that would be ideal.
both of these are to avoid having to refresh like you had to do on myspace (ha). a nice thing about twitter is the numbers populating in real time, taking away the need to blindly refresh to see if anything new is posted etc.
